No doubt, ever since the inception of the internet it has stood gallantly as one of the most powerful driver of innovation (if not the most) the world has witnessed. Additionally, the internet has led to changes in the structure of the communication industry (and many other industries, of course), shifting the industry away from the old ways and driving the industry forward at a formidable pace with creative innovations.

The book and publishing industries are sub divisions of the communications industry. So they also feel the impact the internet has on the communication industry. The internet came with a new concept for the publishing industry called “Digital publishing”, formally called “Electronic publishing (Epub)” before metamorphosing into it's present name.

Nigerian writers seems not to have embraced digital publishing or are still in the process of embracing digital publishing even as they are platforms that seeks to ease the publication of books, magazines etc with ease. Platforms like Okadabooks, Publiseer and so many more. Most Nigerians think that digital publishing has to only do with Epubs, pdfs and so on. But that is a wrong perception of digital publishing, it goes beyond that to websites, blogs, apps even CDs. According to, “even the simple text message is a form of digital publication marketing.”

Like every sectors in Nigeria, the digital publishing faces challenges and i have decided to talk about the challenges of digital publishing in Nigeria.

Having discussed a bit about digital publishing, let's go straight to the reason we are here. let us talk about the challenges of digital publishing in Nigeria :

• Piracy
Due to the fact of lack of an effective legal framework or body to administer digital publishing in Nigeria works published digitally can be sold by anyone or even converted to hard copies and sold. It's known that the Nigerian populace has a low income and not everyone can afford some books, most people who afford such books most times resell (obviously on a more cheaper price) them for a low price and since it's not in a hard copy format this books can be duplicated.

• Content Quality Concern
The ease of publishing digital publishing platforms provides as made the circulation of less quality contents as any writer can become published. This as made many people avoid buying books online but physical book stores in Nigeria where they are sure to get books with good quality, though the physical bookshops are still affected by this ( low content quality) but when compared to that of online book stores, it's by far less.

• The Ugly Monster Called “Plagiarism”
Plagiarism is an offence that deserves penalty. Plagiarism destabilises writers therefore reducing there interest in writing (i have been there). Who wants to write something for someone to steal and claim credits. Well, thanks to some softwares online, plagiarism can be detected in digital publishing. These softwares should be made free or less cheaper since most Nigerian writers can barely pay for such. Writing should be fun.

• Low Area Coverage Of Internet
Most areas in Nigeria lacks the coverage of internet connection but have access to offline book stores. Additionally, slow networks also is a challenge to digital publishing.

• Lack Of Basic Infrastructures.
Digital publishing can't grow in a nation where basic infrastructures like power is not stable. The lack of constant power supply has been a challenge to digital publishing, in fact, all other sectors. Cost of alternatives for electric supply is also very high in Nigeria.

• Cost
This challenge affects not only the digital publishers but everyone within the sector (that is it affects consumers and producers). Cost of digital publishing equipments can be high to an average Nigerian. Even if the digital publishers are able to afford equipments, how many readers / users can afford devices to use them?. This challenge reduces the users of digital publishing platforms to a minimal level.

The challenges of digital publishing in Nigeria was written after carefully taking out a research to understand the digital publishing sector in Nigeria.
